River Legacy Pictures – finally!
After weeks of work, downloading, frustration and a few stomps of my feet, I finally have the River Legacy pictures available for you to view! Thanks to our wonderful computer specialist, Mrs. Lawson, you may view this slide show by clicking on “Mrs. Hay’s Current Events” link under “Blogroll” (right column of webpage). It is the newest addition to that page. I will warn you…some of the pictures are sideways but hopefully you can still get an idea of the fun we had that day! I want to thank the three moms who copied their pictures onto a CD so I could use them in this slide show!
The First Thanksgiving
To learn about the First Thanksgiving, we put on Pilgrim hats, decided which items we brought were things the Pilgrims needed or wanted (we only took the needs but Mrs. Hay had extra so everyone got to carry something), boarded our “Mayflower” and set sail, complete with story and waves! Check out our journey! Go to the Photos and Videos page to find our new slide show.
The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid Of Anything
After reading the story The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything, I had all the kids in our class have a turn acting out the story using props for each part. We had such fun doing it that we decided to present the story to our 3rd-grade buddies. Mrs. Ownby, the 3rd grade teacher, suggested we video the movie so you could enjoy it at home. Please visit our “Photos and Videos” page to see the video. Please realize that I had to reduce the size of the video to allow it to be on my website so it is a bit jerky in spots. I hope that you are able to enjoy the story as it is anyway.
Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2008
Today, we had a wonderful guest come to speak with us! His name is Mr. Dennis Hamlin and he is a veteran who served three tours of duty in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He spoke to us about his life on a ship, the places he went to, and answered questions from the kids, such as his favorite animal (puppy), favorite color (red at the moment) and his favorite food (used to be red beans and cornbread when he would get off the ship). He also told us how to drive a ship, seasickness, and the food in the Navy. He brought in 2 collages, one of his medals, patches and bars from his service; the other was money from the different countries that he visited, such as Hong Kong, Phillipines, Mexico and Brazil. He also showed us some pictures of him in his Navy uniform and the ships he sailed on. Most importantly (to me at least), he spoke to us of his feelings about our U.S. flag and the Pledge of Allegiance (which brought tears to his eyes as well as mine). We sang him our flag song and then took the group photo attached. We thank Mr. Hamlin for coming in and all our soldiers, past and present, for their service to our country!
Class Mission Song
We learned our mission song so well, we decided to post it on our website! At the beginning of the year, we talked about all the things we need to learn in kindergarten so we can go to first grade. Then we discussed what we need to do so that we CAN learn all that content! To help us remember what we decided, we made a song to sing each day. If you want to hear it, go to the Photos and Videos page and listen to us!
Fire Safety Week – October 2008
Our Fire Safety Video is complete! Thanks for your patience! Go to the Photos and Videos page to learn some important safety tips about fires and being a fire fighter.
Talk Like a Pirate Day at Holiday Heights!
I have added a new slide show to the “Photos and Videos” page here on our website! I think the kids have been anxious to get this out for you to see! Enjoy your “treasures” hunting for shape “treasure” at our playground!
Beginning-of-Year Assessments
Thanks to the help of my husband, I have figured out how to post our assessment graphs on my class website! If you click on the page “Assessments”, you will be able to check out our first assessments of letter ID and letter sounds. I hope to update these graphs each 6 weeks so you can track our progress towards our class goal.
